0 Cyndi Stivers named editor-in-chief of Columbia Journalism Review

Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) announced today that Cyndi Stivers has been appointed the editor-in-chief of the publication. Stivers, an adjunct professor at the Journalism School, teaches a digital magazine workshop. She chairs the Editorial Council of the American Society of Magazine Editors, of which she is a past president. She is the former managing editor of EW.com, and the founding editor-in-chief of Time Out New York.

Stivers has served as an adviser to Consumer Reports WebWatch and has worked with Time Inc., National Geographic, Etsy and the global newsstand Magzter.

Founded in 1961, CJR is the leading media monitor in the nation, publishing a bimonthly magazine and a daily website of press criticism.

0 Journalism School Students Take Second Place in AP Awards

The New York State Associated Press Association has announced results of its 2010-11 NYS AP awards contest, recognizing excellent writing, presentation, photography and graphics in AP member newspapers.The work done by Journalism School students for the Albany Times Union on property taxes investigation took 2nd place for online content. Columbia Journalism School observed Journalism Day today with David Brooks, op-ed columnist at the New York Times, delivering the annual Pringle Lecture.

John Branch, who writes for the New York Times, was presented with the Mike Berger Award, and a winning team from the Associated Press—Matt Apuzzo, Adam Goldman, Chris Hawley, and Eileen Sullivan—accepted the Paul Tobenkin Memorial Award.

Awards were also bestowed upon top journalism students. The winners are:
