Our latest feautured blog of the month is by Ana Cristina Pratas from her excellent blog CristinaSkyBox. Her post 'The power of quiet' looks at quiet time in classes and the difference between quiet and silence in class. In the post, Ana Cristina also discusses the value of technology and poses questions about how technology can enhance learning. Ana Cristina has been teaching EAP/ESP for over 20 years now, in a a variety of settings,from Universities and Colleges, to Financial companies and Industry. She currently teaches in the Middle East and one of her main interests is to encourage learner autonomy, creativity and critical thinking skills through the use of technology. The J-School and Dean Nicholas Lemann were featured in a clue on a recent episode of Jeopardy!, one of America's most popular game shows.

On July 19th, Jeopardy aired the following clue for $1200 in the category "Deans": "New Yorker Staff Writer Nicholas Lemann is also Dean of the USA's best known school of this, at Columbia."

The work of several J-School alumni made the New York Times' list of 100 Notable Books of 2011, including Leah Hager Cohen '91, Tony Horwitz '83, Erik Larson '78, Joseph Lelyveld '60 and Janet Reitman '92.

Leah Hager Cohen, who serves as the Jenks Chair in Contemporary American Letters at the College of the Holy Cross, made the list for her latest novel, The Grief of Others.Best-selling author Tony Horwitz earned the Times' attention with his new book Midnight Rising, about John Brown and the historic raid on Harper's Ferry that helped spark the Civil War.Erik Larson, the author of many books including Lethal Passage and The Devil In The White City, made the list for his new best-seller, In The Garden of Beasts, which explores the fascinating history of the American ambassador and his family in 1930s Nazi Germany.Joseph Lelyveld, the Pulitzer Prize-winning former executive editor of the Times, landed a spot for his recent book Great Soul, which explores Mahatma Gandhi's role as a social reformer in India.Janet Reitman, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, made the list for Inside Scientology, her in-depth exploration of one the world's most controversial religions.
