It's November 8, and later on today American School employees will receive flu shots to help keep them healthy throughout the winter months. This might not seem like a big deal, but it's another way we offer caring student service. Because of today's flu shots, we shouldn't have to worry about a flu epidemic wiping out whole departments for a few days at a time. By doing everything we can to keep ourselves healthy during cold and flu season, we can maintain the same turnaround time for the grading of exams and provide you with quick and steady service in other departments. In fact, during this cold and flu season, you may have the opportunity to receive even quicker exam turnaround. Check this blog on Monday for details!

0 Today’s Special Occasion: International Education Week
It's November 16, and today is the last day of International Education Week. The American School is more than just a school for Americans who live in the United States. In fact, included in our student body are American citizens who are temporarily living overseas, as well as full-time residents of many foreign countries. If you are in either of those two groups, we have special enrollment applications designed just for you. Perhaps even moreso than students who live stateside, our students who live overseas will appreciate the quicker turnaround time when they take online exams in select paper-based courses. Add our Online Learning page to your favorites, and check it often so that you'll be the first to know when these exams will become available to our entire student body.
0 Today’s Special Occasion: Veterans Day
It's November 12, and since November 11 fell on a Sunday this year, today is the official federal holiday in observance of Veterans Day. We are proud to include the word "American" in our name every day, but moreso on this day when we honor the service and sacrifices of our veterans and their families. We are most grateful for them and thank them for all they have done for our country.
0 Today’s Anniversary: Teddy Roosevelt’s Foreign Trip
It's November 9, and on this date in 1906, President Teddy Roosevelt became the first sitting president to take a foreign trip when he traveled south to check out the construction of the Panama Canal. These days, presidential trips to foreign countries are commonplace and even a necessity in many instances, but back then the idea of a president visiting a foreign country while in office was something entirely new. All of us at the American School know that people today don't stay in one place for too long. You may take a vacation for a few days, or you may have to go out of town or even go overseas for an extended period of time. That's why our curriculum is perfect for every need. You can take our course materials with you wherever you go, and if you're going to be overseas for an extended period of time, we can make arrangements for you to receive several courses at once, provided your account is in good financial standing. Beginning next week, we'll have a new way for you to get your exams to us quicker whether you're right near our office near Chicago or halfway around the world. 0 Today’s Birthday: August Krogh
It's November 15, and Danish scientist August Krogh was born on this date in 1874. He won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1920 and was best known for his study of how capillaries are regulated in skeletal muscles. If you read our blog entry from a couple days ago, you know that the American School will soon offer online exams for select paper-based courses, including what would've been Krogh's favorite course, Physiology and Health. Please read the information and documents on the Online Learning page carefully before deciding if online exams are are option for you when they become available.

0 Today’s Special Occasion: Election Day
It's November 6, and Americans are going to the polls to vote for president and many other national, state and local offices. For months now, we've heard candidates make campaign promises and explain what their platforms are, all in an attempt to get your vote. Unfortunately, over the years we've seen many such campaign promises go up in smoke the moment some candidates take office. The American School makes promises to our students and prospective students, and we keep our promises. Our platform includes a commitment to outstanding curriculum, affordable cost, caring student service, and more than a century of credibility. One part of our outstanding curriculum is our Social Civics course. Students who complete Social Civics learn how all levels of government work, something that is useful every day of the year, but especially on Election Day!
0 Today’s Anniversary: The Museum of Modern Art
It's November 7, and on this date in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art opened in New York City. The MoMA contains more than 150,000 pieces of art by such artists as Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Andrew Wyeth, father of American School graduate Jamie Wyeth. The American School has a pair of art courses in its curriculum. Drawing Animals and Drawing Landscapes are half-unit courses that require students put forth time and effort in an attempt to perfect their artistic skills. Both courses provide a solid foundation in art and would be a good first step for students who wish to have their works in the MoMA someday!
