Journalist’s Resource, a project of Carnegie-Knight Initiative Nick_lemann-exterior-shot
and Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center, recently sat down with Columbia University Journalism School Dean Nicholas Lemann to discuss knowledge-based journalism, politics and campaign coverage, and the future of the profession, among many other things.

The Journalist’s Resource is an open-access site that curates scholarly studies relevant to the media for use by practitioners, educators and students. It is part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative, a collaboration of foundations
and eleven universities including Columbia Journalism School, that is working to develop a vision of what a journalism school can be at an institution of higher education.

“So what journalists are is a connection point between the informed general public and the inaccessible … anything that the public doesn’t have ready access to that’s relevant to the public’s understanding of important things in the world.
We’re supposed to make those connections. And knowledge-
based journalism is an important part of doing that. So it really does produce journalism that is richer and fuller,” Lemann said in the interview, on discussing his commitment to knowledge-based reporting.
