Recent alumnus Simon Akam '09 is Reuters' correspondent in Sierra Leone in West Africa. Alongside his wire service work, he has written from Africa for publications including the Economist and the New York Times.

After finishing at the J-School, where he studied on a Fulbright scholarship from the UK, he worked at the New York Times in New York. He began his current job after time spent with Reuters in Istanbul on a Overseas Press Club scholarship.
Recently Simon wrote about going on the campaign trail in Liberia with warlord-turned-presidential candidate Prince Johnson for the New Republic. In 2010, he was named the winner of the Guardian's International Development Journalism
Competition for a story on the conflict in Karamoja, northeast Uganda.
