David Zinman ’52 recently came across boxes of old clips, which span his fifty-year career as a journalist. He decided to create a scrapbook of his work to present to his grandchildren, so they will understand what being a “newspaperman” meant.

Amidst the files, Zinman discovered his first big story. In 1960, he was a cub reporter for the Associated Press, and was one of many who covered the early days of desegregation in America. He interviewed the only two white families in New Orleans who protested the new policy by keeping their children home from school.

Today, Zinman writes for an online publication called The Columnists.com. In the most recent issue, Zinman’s column recalls this big AP assignment, covering the first integration of a public school in New Orleans. Read about his assignment in “A Matter of Principle.”
