Laura J. Keller '12, an M.S. candidate studying broadcast journalism at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, has been named by Investigative Reporters & Editors as the Jennifer Leonard Scholarship recipient.

The scholarship, presented to female students or professional journalists with three or fewer years of work experience, allows the recipient to attend one of IRE's annual conferences as one of its fellows.

Keller attended the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting's 2012 CAR conference in St. Louis through Sunday, Feb. 26. The conference was devoted to teaching and sharing computer-assisted reporting techniques.

A four-day marathon of the latest in database reporting, online mapping and data illustration, NICAR's list of workshops and panels impressed Keller. She especially enjoyed learning about negotiating for data transparency from government agencies and being introduced to how social media feeds can be turned into investigative material.

Keller also participated in CAR's mini-boot camp, a special series of hands-on classes that delved into deeper data analysis with IRE trainers.
