Dartmouth College’s Center for Women and Gender Studies has named Columbia Journalism School Professor Helen Benedict its Visionary in Residence for 2012.
Annual honorees are in residence at Dartmouth for 3 to 5 days, and are chosen for their demonstrated ability to increase understanding of intersecting aspects of individual and cultural identity. They are recognized for their commitment to fostering collaboration among diverse constituents, and to engaging a range of communities and enriching interaction among them. Past Visionary-in-Residence honorees include author and educator Dorothy Allison, writer and activist Rebecca Walker, Green Party vice presidential candidate and environmental activist Winona LaDuke, and Third Wave activists Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards.
As part of her residency, Benedict will deliver three presentations: a dinner Q&A tonight on “The Lonely Soldier Monologues”; a lunch panel tomorrow, “Gender Military,” with Dartmouth veterans; and a keynote address and reading from “Sand Queen” tomorrow night. All events are open to the public; please see the website for required rsvp information.
Benedict is the author of five novels and five books of nonfiction. Her sixth novel, “Sand Queen,” is based on the research for her most recent nonfiction book, “The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq.” Benedict has won three major awards for her work on soldiers: The 2010 Exceptional Merit in Media Award from the National Women’s Political Caucus, The Ken Book Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness for 2010, and the 2008 James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism. She has testified twice to Congress on behalf of women in the military.
